Warm like toast The hostel is completely centrally heated, so you should never get cold here. Each room has a radiator in it, with a variable temperature control.
Its not always cold.. Edinburgh can get very cold in winter, but in summer its actually often very beautiful weather. We try to control when the heating as needed. We leave it on 24 hours in winter, but in summer we scale that down. We don’t want to get hot and stuffy!
Hot Water Hot water is available 24 hours a day. Some of the showers run off the central system, while others use an instantaneous electric system located in the shower.
Free Rent You can stay with us as long as you want. If you stay for 6 nights, we give you, absolutely free, your seventh night. Thats the kind of nice people we are.
And after that? After you have stayed for 3 weeks, the prices go down. You are then on long term rates, which are £9.00 per night, with your 7th night still free!
Advance Payments To claim your seventh night, you just have to stay 6 consecutive nights. It doesn’t matter if you pay night by night, you still qualify after 6 paid nights. We automatically add it on.
We Never Sleep Well, thats a lie, really. We just do it at odd hours. You will always find someone around the hostel, watching a video, or talking in the dining room. Its all Open The kitchens, bathrooms, video room, internet and shop are all open and available to use 24 hours a day. Sometimes during the day we may kick you out of them for a short while so we can clean them, but otherwise they are there for you. Always someone on Reception Every night, all night, someone is on reception, ready to help. You can check-in or check-out anytime at all.
Always Open We are open 24 hours-a-day seven-days-a-week. Never ever will you be left outside waiting to get in. You may check in or checkout any time you want. Someone is always sitting at our reception ready to help you.
Getting In After midnight we do lock the front door for security reasons. All you must do is press the button outside the front door and tell us what your name is and which bed you are staying in and we will buzz door open for you. When you reach the top of the stairs, just knock on the door, then show us your card we gave you at checkin, and voila!
When you get back Everything in the hostel is available. We do ask that you keep the noise down in the hallways and rooms, because everyone else is sleeping, but in the common rooms its a free-for-all. The video room, kitchens, showers, internet and shop are all waiting for you.
By Bus Leave the Bus Station by the St. Andrew Square exit, one floor above the bus arrivals level. Outside, turn left and walk to the first street on your left, which is West Register Street. You will see a map on the wall pointing to us. Follow this road around, and we will be there somewhere, between the hairdressers and Guildford Arms. We are on the top floor.
By Train The train will stop at Waverley station. Follow the signs from there to Princes St. When you reach it look across the road, and you will see a Burger King. We are right behind that.
By Plane The plane will stop at Edinburgh Airport. The good news is that we are nowhere near that! When you get there, take the airport bus, which will stop on Waverley Bridge(last stop). Walk up to Princes St, turn right, and you will come across the Burger King which we are behind.
More Landmarks Landmarks help find places in a new city, so here are some to help you. As we said we are behind the Burger King. The Burger King is opposite the Balmoral, with the big clock you can see in the header of this page. Also opposite the Burger King is the horse statue. Our road is in between the Burger King and the statue. Our doorway is between the Guildford Arms and the Hairdresser. Make sure you go to the very top floor, where our reception is.
DVD’s We also have over 200 DVD’s available to hire from Reception. A movie only cost 50p to hire along with a small deposit.
Working in Edinburgh Edinburgh is a great place for people who decide to work in the U.K. Australians, Canadians, Kiwis and South Africans find it easy to get work visas for the U.K. and choose Edinburgh as a good base. Many Americans, working through the BUNAC scheme, also like Edinburgh.
Somewhere to Live In our hostel, many people stay long term. Rather than organising a flat, they choose to live in the backpackers, enjoying the party atmosphere whilst working.
Cheap place to live After 3 weeks, the prices become £54 a week for dormitory accommodation. This includes everything you get at the normal rates. Some people find it very hard to leave, having stayed for over a year! Its just that sort of place.
Sundays a good day On Sunday evening, we offer a free Sunday Dinner. All you have to do is wait in the dining room, and then eat. You can get it sometime around 7-30pm. Ask at reception for the exact time on the night.
Backpacker Cuisine The meal is cooked by one of the people staying at the hostel, which means there can be a lot of variety. People from different nationalities cook the meal, so expect an Italian, Spanish, Indian, French or Aussie meal. We often even have a master French Chef cooking.
Vegetarians We don’t do individual orders, but we do usually have a vegetarian dish available.
Close to Shopping Princes St is the greatest shopping centre in the world. It has all the ‘high st’ shops, specialty shops, department stores, food and more. The great thing, though, is all that is on one side of the street. On the other side is a huge garden area, a monument, church, and a rather large castle. It can only be described as beautiful, and its literally right on our doorstep.
Close to touristy things Apart from all that on Princes St, take a 2 minute walk over NorthBridge, and you will be on the Royal Mile. This is a stretch of road (guess how long) that goes from the castle, down to Hollyrood Palace (where the royals live when they’re in town). Its an incredibly historic stretch of road, and the focus of all things touristy. The tourist Bureau is also located across the road from us.
Close to entertainment. Edinburgh has over 700 pubs, so its pretty easy to be close to them. Indeed, we have a few of them in just our building. All the clubs and pubs of Edinburgh are within stumbling distance from us. Its great. You can somehow always get back no matter what state you are in. Theres also Art Galleries, museums, restaurants and whatever else you want close by.
Everyday Edinburgh has free walking tours by our good friends at Sandemans. Ask at reception, and we will point you to the start location, which is a 5 minute walk from us.
